are they all expensive?? anyone know of any cheaper ones?

They are about $400.00-$500.00 depaending on sales or not. There is always e-bay or used, but you take your chances. If the medics and fire are your primary interest then the Pro-97 will probably suit your needs well for awhile. The digital scanners are needed for most all Sheriff, North County Law and well as the East County Law agencies. Most fire and medic traffic can be heard on 800 magahertz analogue. The cheaper scanner also receives several mutual aid talkgroups used on larger event when different agencies want to talk to each other.
