The Seattle retail giant is gearing up to move into a 702,535-square-foot building currently under construction on a roughly 40-acre site on Otay Mesa Road. It will use the building to park delivery trucks and for extra storage, which is convenient because it is across the street from its massive 3.4 million-square-foot facility that opened this summer.

Amazon’s second building, even though it is much smaller than their first structure, still makes it one of the largest buildings in the rapidly industrializing Otay Mesa on the U.S.-Mexico border and increases its footprint in the region. It is also building a 344,000-square-foot warehouse in Tijuana, roughly two miles south of its U.S. facility.

Environmental approvals with San Diego County for the new Otay Mesa building say it will have 443 parking spaces, 259 trailer parking spaces, two guardhouses and 18,597 square feet of office space. Nearly 500,000-square-feet of the space will be used for short-term storage and offloading products.

Despite only getting building permits approved in late June, the structure is going up rapidly with most of the walls and roof already completed. It is anticipated to open in late 2022.

Amazon already has distribution centers and warehouses in Carlsbad, National City, Rancho Bernardo, Vista and Kearny Mesa.

Amazon distribution center OK’d for Oceanside

Online shopping giant Amazon plans to open a distribution center with about 500 employees in Oceanside’s Ocean Ranch Corporate Center.
The 142,746-square-foot, single-story, concrete tilt-up building on Ocean Ranch Boulevard will have 15 truck terminals and parking for 230 employee vehicles and 703 fleet vehicles. It will cover two vacant industrial pads totaling 28 acres near an existing FedEx warehouse and the U.S. postal facility on Avenida del Oro.
The Amazon distribution center will provide “last-mile transit” for orders that are packaged elsewhere from inventory stored at one of the company’s “fulfillment centers,”
Warehouse operations and tractor-trailer deliveries will take place 24 hours a day, while van deliveries will only occur between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Amazon withdraws application for proposed Oceanside distribution center

City Council voted to deny project after residents appealed

The owners of a 28-acre vacant site in an Oceanside industrial park have dropped their application to build an Amazon package distribution center there.
Lincoln Property Company Vice President Clay Duvall submitted a two-paragraph letter Tuesday to City Planner Jeff Hunt and the city clerk stating that the company was “officially withdrawing” with no further details.
“I’m unaware of any other reasons that influenced the withdrawal of the application other than (the Oceanside City) Council’s decision to overturn the (Planning Commission’s) approval,”

The proposed Amazon site is directly across from a Fed Ex distribution facility that often generates noise complaints.
“It makes noise at all hours of the night. The beep, beep, beep of backing up ... I hear drills taking off tires.
“We all need quiet time,” she said. “We need rest and sleep for sanity.”

Amazon Abandons Warehouse Plan Because San Diego Is Considering Worker Protection Law

The law would require Amazon raise wages and offer more safety training and sick days.

Amazon backed out of a last-mile distribution center project near San Diego, California, because of a proposed law that would require it to pay workers more and offer them stronger protections, Motherboard has confirmed.
The law, known as the Working Families Ordinance, would require that employers that operate on San Diego-county owned land pay the prevailing wage—which is based on union wages—and mandate 56 hours of annual sick leave for workers.

In a statement, Maria Boschetti, a spokesperson for Amazon confirmed that Amazon had backed out of the deal, but did not specify the reason why Amazon backed out of the project. "While we have decided not to pursue the site in El Cajon, we continue to assess opportunities to invest and grow across the region," she said. "We appreciate the time and attention committed by the City of San Diego, as well as local community leaders and officials.”

Chesnut Properties, the developer of the Amazon warehouse in El Cajon, wrote that the Working Families Ordinance was the reason for Amazon's withdrawal from the project.

Amazon doubles down on San Diego office space with lease at The Collection at UTC

E-commerce giant leases 123,000 square feet at the mall-attached property to expand its office footprint in the high-tech San Diego submarket.

Amazon is paying $5.70 per square foot, plus expenses, according to the Seritage release

Amazon did not respond to a request for comment on the lease.

In University City, the e-commerce giant already leases around 130,000 square feet of office space at 10300 Campus Point Drive. Amazon also leases 181,000 square feet of office-friendly space at 16550 Via Esprillo in Rancho Bernardo, according to CoStar. It also operates more than 5 million square feet of distribution and warehouse centers in the county, with more facilities in the pipeline.

“My theory is that Amazon is following Apple, because Apple is a big cloud client. Apple has leased over 1 million square feet in (University City). ... It makes sense to add space so that they can take care of their client,” said Joshua Ohl, who is the local director of market analytics for CoStar.
