Chula Vista Newbie----- Scanner question
I'm a long time nascar fan and have been using basic race scanners. I want to be able to listen to most if not all SD county poilice traffic. Is there a scanner that will allow me to listen to police traiffic and when I hit the race track be able to listen to my favorite drivers? I hope this is possible. I've been listening to the live stream for quite sometime, but I really need to get something more portable. I'm looking for a quality scanner that will allow me to get a lot of use out of it. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the ScanDiego Forum.
You would need to look at the Digital scanners.
All Law Enforcement in the county is Digital.
As of right now San Diego City(SDPD) is still Analog.
Uniden 396 (Handheld) - Came out in 2005

or
GRE PSR500 (Handheld) - Came out in Oct, 2007

Just remember... Don't buy a Radio Shack Pro96. It will be out dated in the next few years...

Yes - Any scanner can listen to the race traffic.
You would just have to program the frequencies in the scanner.
About the only thing to be concern about is when Uniden will release the next new digital handheld. Could be release next year. There been no 'hint' of new scanner release yet.
There are many website that list the race stuff.

YES - Uniden 396 will work for a long time. Since they track 700/800MHz freqs just fine on the trunked systems.
Radio Shack Pro96 wont work on the upgraded RCS system in 2011 if San Diego county chose to use 700MHz freqs. (That's Why I said don't buy a Pro96)
If you find a good deal for a Uniden 396 Get it. It's easy to use..
But if you are thinking of buy two digital scanners in the next year.
Get the PSR500 or PSR600!
Good Luck picking out a digital scanner
Please come back and let us know what scanner you buy.
