San Diego City agrees to spend $21M on four police helicopters to replace aging ABLE fleet in 2020-2024

San Diego plans to spend $21 million over the next five years replacing the Police Department’s aging fleet of four helicopters, which were all bought in 2004 and 2005.

The City Council this week approved a five-year agreement with Airbus Helicopters to immediately buy one helicopter for $4.6 million and purchase three more for $5.5 million each before the deal ends in 2024.

The helicopters the city plans to buy, H125, are essentially a modernized version of what the city already uses.

The new helicopters might use these reserved tail numbers:
N881SD , N882SD , N883SD , N884SD Reserved Date: 04/25/2019

Safran Helicopter Engines ARRIEL 2D turboshaft engine

Its Safran Helicopter Engines ARRIEL 2D engine is equipped with an upgraded triple engine
control: one dual channel FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) unit plus a third
independent & automatic back up channel. This modern engine is fitted with an Engine Data
Recorder (EDR) that manages cycle countings & usage tracking thus paving the way for more
predictive maintenance. Engine TBO and maintenance inspection intervals are extended.
Consequently operating costs will be reduced.

This makes the helicopter the most adapted for all types of missions such as aerial work, firefighting,
law enforcement, Search And Rescue or passenger transportation, especially in hot & high
and extreme environments. It demonstrated its tremendous capabilities while breaking the World
Record for the highest altitude landing and take-off.

847 shp (632 kW) equivalent Thermodynamic Power, in standard atmosphere, at Sea Level.
Triple engine control: one dual channel FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) unit plus and a third independent and automatic back up channel
Optimized engine ratings according to outside operations conditions thanks to electronic governing system (FADEC)
Optimized engine monitoring through the VEMD
Automatic starting sequence
One Engine Data Recorder, with a memory forfurther download
Electronic N2 overspeed protection

-----------------------------------------------------------
The Air Support Unit’s four (4) old helicopters were purchased in 2004 and 2005, and each have
approximately 10,000 hours of flight time. The Police Department Air Support Unit averages over 3,100
flight hours per year.

San Diego City Police Helicopters Notes:
19 MARCH 2019 –
AeroComputers is pleased to announce that the San Diego Police Air Support Unit has selected
the UC-6000 mission computer as part of the Department’s ongoing technology advancements
to keep the citizens of San Diego safe.

Using the UC-6000 mission computer, San Diego Air Support Unit’s helicopters can now receive
Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) messages. When the decision is made to respond to an
incident, the UC-6000 provides the bearing and distance to the incident and when prompted,
slews the helicopter’s camera to the target location. This technology reduces response times,
enhances situational awareness, and provides air crews access to critical information. The safety
of citizens and first responders is dramatically improved.

“We are very pleased to continue our long-standing relationship in support of the San Diego
Police Air Support Unit. They will certainly enjoy the exceptional performance the UC-6000
provides as they serve the citizens of San Diego” said David Cady, Sales Manager at
AeroComputers, Inc.
