Local Firefighters Raise More Than $200,000 For The Burn Institute

If you happened to see a firefighter holding out a boot on May 9,
then you witnessed something special – the 8th Annual “Give Burns the Boot,” Firefighter Boot Drive.
At various intersections around San Diego County, firefighters held out their boots while passing motorists generously helped fill them with spare change, ones, fives, twenties and yes, even $100 bills.

In one day, firefighters representing nearly 30 fire departments, raised more than $200,000 for the important work of the Burn Institute, which includes fire and burn prevention education programs and burn survivor support programs like Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children.

“The boot drive has become one of the Institute’s most successful events,” said James Floros, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Burn Institute. “All the money raised here, stays here locally, added Floros.

The top fire department from each region will get to take home the traveling bronze boot drive trophy.
This year’s winners are:
Chula Vista (South Bay)
Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District (North County) :o
San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District (East County)
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Station 1 B Shift (San Diego City).

The winner of the Bronze Fire Chief 0-1 Trophy goes to
Rancho Santa Fe Fire Chief Nick Pavone for raising the most money in a chief’s boot.

Here some info about Nick pavone.

The Burn Institute extends its heartfelt appreciation to all the firefighters who participated in the 8th Annual “Give Burns the Boot” Firefighter Boot Drive and to all the compassionate residents of San Diego County who supported their efforts.

Escondido firefighters raised nearly $17,000 in three hours at four intersections.

Carlsbad, whose firefighters raised about $4,500 this year

Ramona firefighters nearly topped $10,000 at three traffic-heavy spots.

And in tiny Solana Beach, the tally was $2,700 after just two hours at one location.

But in Poway, where firefighters raised about $7,000 last year, less than $450 had been thrown into the boots by day's end, a small collection that firefighters attributed to their new locations in front of Wal-Mart and four Starbucks stores. Poway was the only North County city whose firefighters weren't collecting money on the streets.
