I programmed it using the Uniden program, and the files for the 396 are interchangeable for the 996. Only minor changes may be desired, plus any GPS info, if you are going to use this feature.
Only one complaint (which I have already made to Uniden). The manual shows that the top text line is the "System name". In trunked systems, it is actually the "Site names", which does not make sense, and can be confusing unless you have memorized the name of each system's tower site names.
Otherwise, it is a beautiful unit. It is slightly smaller than the 785/796, so it will fit in the same space. It is going in the truck this weekend.
