At the December 11, 2007 Chula Vista City Council meeting the council voted to authorize the City Manager to enter into negotiations with the San Diego Fire Department to provide Fire and EMS dispatch services to the city.

Read it here: http://209.242.175.50/weblink7/docview.aspx?id=52984

Tentative startup date is March 15, 2008. While 9 dispatchers will be layed off by the city of Chula Vista, San Diego Fire is planning to hire 3 or 4 of them as an increase in call volume is expected. (about 15,000 calls per year)

While details are still being worked out, it is expected that Chula Vista will retain the use of the RCS radios used on the South system, while San Diego Fire will begin using the same system including Fire and Law CC in providing dispatch services to Chula Vista.

Areas where changes may occur are Alarm Assignments. Like Poway, Chula Vista may be asked to adopt San Diego Fire response protocols for Residential, Commercial and High Rise fires and Ringing Alarms, as well as rescue responses. No numbering changes of fire apparatus are expected. San Diego Fire will be working closely with AMR (sole Paramedic provider for Chula Vista) with regard to technology issues related to communications, CAD 2 CAD data transfer and coordination.

Tim,

Thanks for the information.

I find it odd that they would let Chula Vista keep the numbers they currently use (Station 51-59) when Poway just gave up those numbers. With the number of planned SDFD stations they will easily move into the 50's in the future. Why not avoid a future problem and renumber CVFD from the start?

Here is a link to the entire report from CVFD regarding dispatching...

There are still many questions to be asked and answered. Change, especially in the fire service is not necessarily a welcomed event. Poway changed numbers because (in part) they believe there is a trend afoot for all departments in the county to go back to the 4-digit numbering system. Until about 5 years ago, Chula Vista used the same system. Nothing is to say they won't return to it.

So to hear chula fire dispatches you will need to listen to San diego Fire dispatch on the city system?

CHULA VISTA FD Dispatch

On 3/5/08 San Diego FD began dispatch for the City of Chula Vista Fire Department. A seamless transfer of responsibility was accomplished in a relatively short period time - 10 weeks!

Chula Vista FD has adopted many of San Diego's alarm assignments while maintaining some of their own (specifically 2 units to all freeway traffic accidents). In addition, San Diego has adopted a few of Chula Vista's "Nature/Problems" like, Waterflow Alarm, Illegal Burn, and Knocked Off Hydrant.

San Diego FD will eventually have three RCS radio console at their Kearny Villa Rd communications center.

To better coordinate with Chula Vista's contracted ambulance provider, AMR, a CAD 2 CAD interface was established. This allows AMR to 'see' a Chula Vista medical response as soon as it becomes available for fire dispatch. AMR will continue to handle downgraded calls, Level 3 and 4 with ALS or BLS without a first responder.

San Diego FD is committed to providing the citizens of Chula Vista with the best, most comprehensive dispatch service available.

Welcome aboard, Chula Vista. Hmmmmm...is Bonita next?

Simultaneous AMR. Awesome. Wonder how much their on-scene times will improve. Will the days of "AMR on scene" flip to "FD on scene"? Guess I'll have to live vicariously now that I don't have a scanner.

Tim,

Will Chula Vista be changing from Zone 4 to Zone 3?
