Copter 2 has been spending its days at Montgomery Field and its nights at station 43 (Brown Field).

It is in service, but I personally haven't heard it assigned to any calls. It continues to make training flights, usually either to Sycamore Canyon or to Sweetwater Reservoir.

Thanks Mike. There's a little 2 story parking structure that overlooks where the helos practice their touch and go's behind a business directly across the street from AMR on Balboa. If I go to lunch and either the SDFD or SDPD helos are doing them, I'll go over and get some photos.

So now that both are on line, I note that Copter 1 seems to be operating out of Brown Field, and Copter 2 out of Montgomery.

There doesn't seem to be any consistency to the basing of the two helicopters. Usually it is Copter 1 that goes to Station 43, but sometimes it's Copter 2. Also, the amount of time spent there by either helicopter varies. Mostly, it seems like there is only a helicopter at 43 during the night. Typically, one of them goes down there about 5:00 PM and returns to Montgomery in the morning, but not always. Sometimes they spend the whole day there.

I was at Montgomery Field today about noon and both helicopters were there.

They have been doing a lot of training in the Otay Mountain and Otay Lakes areas with the helicopter that is at Station 43.

The support facilities for the Sheriff's birds is at Gillespie (the department maintains their aircraft themselves). I believe SDFD contracts out their maintenance.

The mechanics that work on the SDFD helicopters have shirts that have "RSI Rotorcraft Support, Inc." on the back, so presumably that's who they contract with for maintenance. They are based in Van Nuys.
