Police stingray devices

Post by mike »

I heard Escondido and San Diego police are playing around with those stingray devices AkA Cell Site Simulator or fake cell towers and possibly monitoring every cell phone in that particular region.

A bit of an old article but it has some good info I happened to come across.

A little about how they work and that may have been a possible reason for the phone issues people have had recently perhaps also it could be due to sneaking in that COVID-19 tracking people included with updates.

Anyone who monitors the NTF task force or the feds has probably heard the term "The Special" or "Special"...

Locally when surveillance teams refer to "The Special" it means a stingray device. and(or) the info being relayed via that device.

The term has roots....because back in the olden days.......(retro scan dream sequence)

The telcos have divisions called "Special Services" that in the (olden days) had a room at the local telephone switching office in many larger cities. We had a Special Services room at the Hillcrest Pacific telephone offices at 5th and Robinson, where the local feds and SDPD intel folks tapped targeted phone lines and mobile phones. Big headphones, and reel to reel recorders and all that glowy-hummy stuff.

Over the years the term morphed into "Special" or just "The Special"....
Basically taps, bugs, GPS, bumper beepers and all that sexy spy stuff.

( No connection to Twice's song "Feel Special")
