air units - IFR or VFR

Post by Guest »

Are the various air units (police, fire, medical) usually IFR or VFR? After leaving tower freq are they required to check in with regional air traffic controllers? They usually fly low, so I would guess that they don't have to call atc.

Air Units IFR or VFR

IFR flight requires the aircraft and pilot to be cerified. Niether is the case with ABLE or ASTREA.

Mercy AIR does IFR when needed.

When ASTREA and ABLE fly outside the Class B and D airspace, they usually don't chat with ATC. We don't have Class C airspace in San Diego.
ABLE talks to Montgomery and Lindberg the most. ASTREA talks with Gillespie and not much else, maybe Carlsbad on occation.

Did I answer any of your question? :)
