996 Group settings? Whats the best way?

This is the place to discuss generalized scanner questions and information for San Diego County. Whether it's radios, antennas, or other general scanner related topics, you can talk about it here.

996 Group settings? Whats the best way?

Post by IronCross »

Well I just got done learning how to do the groups.

My question is this. Witch is a good/right way to scan.

For RCS

1. One group for all sites where all the talkgroups are in one spot.

2. Make Groups per Dept for all sites.

3. Make a group for each site as in what Depts use that site they get added.

4. Make groups for the depts and add them to the sites they use.

I havnt tryed it and not sure if it will work.

Its not that I dont know how to do it, its I would like to know witch is the more pratical. At this time Im using the number 1 setup.

So what setup are you using and your input please...

Here's how I have mine set up -

I have separate systems for "RCS South Fire", "RCS South Law", "RCS North Fire", "RCS North Law", "RCS East", "RCS Northeast", "RCS Hendrix", "RCS Boucher", etc. The groups inside the systems are setup as follows -

RCS South Fire
1 - Heartland Fire
2 - Chula Vista Fire
3 - CDF
4 - Fire Mutual Aid (South and East Cmds/Tacs, N Cmd 5/Tac 9-11)
5 - Countywide (Co Tac, the "Airs", etc)
6 - ALS Areas, Disaster Med S/T, Emergency
7 - Imperial County EMS
8 - Medic -> Hospital
9 - Lifeguards
0 - ICS

RCS South Law
1 - SDSO (broken into a couple groups, but with the same quick key)
2 - CHP
3 - El Cajon PD
4 - La Mesa PD
5 - National City PD
6 - Chula Vista PD
7 - Coronado PD
8 - Harbor PD
9 - Law Mutual Aid / Countywide
0 - CalTrans

RCS North Fire
1 - North Comm Fire
2 - Escondido Fire
3 - Heartland Fire
4 - CDF
5 - Fire Mutual Aid
6 - Countywide
7 - ALS Areas, Disaster Med S/T, Emergency
8 - Medic -> Hospital
9 - Lifeguards
0 - ICS

RCS North Law
1 - SDSO Dispatches/Tacs
2 - SDSO "Other" (SID, CID, etc)
3 - CHP
4 - Carlsbad PD
5 - Oceanside PD
6 - Escondido PD
7 - Rancho Santa Fe Patrol
8 - Mutual Aid (Law and Countywide)
9 - Dist Attorney / ICS / etc
0 - CalTrans

RCS East/Northeast/Fill-Ins
1 - Heartland Fire
2 - CDF
3 - Fire Mutual Aid
4 - Countywide stuff
5 - Medics -> Hospital
6 - SDSO Disp/Tacs (Poway, Santee, Rural, San Marcos)
7 - SDSO "Others"/Probation/Dist Attorney
8 - CHP
9 - Law Mutual Aid
0 - Imperial County/CalTrans

This works for me because I can turn off agencies easily enough. There's a 200 talkgroup limit and only 10 "banks" per group, so splitting them out like this makes it easy. I usually have all but the local SDSO channels locked out for wherever I happen to be.

I just spent about 2hrs going threw the Socal Freq book finding what Depts use what.

I only I have one scanner and I use it all the time at home and on the go and I go out far east often in the fall.

My setup is

San Diego RCS [system]

South Zone [site]
North Zone [site]
East Zone [site]
and so on

San Diego RCS [group] so far 180 TGs]

Im going to spend all night redoing the programing.

Thanks very much fo your help :D

Also do you cut up say Heartland or you add the full Cmds/tacs to each system.

Im not sure how to cut up the

Heartland
CHP
CDF
etc

You just cut them by the RCS Map??

On the RCS South system, the full Heartland channel lineup is in there in 1 group with 1 QK (Disp 1, Disp 2, Cmd 1 - 5, 7, 8, 9 and Tac 1 - 16 as well as the various Admin channels for the local departments and things like Zone). On the RCS North and East/Northeast/etc systems I have just Disp 1, Disp 2, Cmd 5, 7, 8, 9 and Tac 9 - 16 along with Viejas, Barona, and Inland Admins in a single group with a single QK.

For CHP, only the El Cajon and Resident channels are really in use and those you can pretty much hear on any system within earshot of El Cajon's coverage (from Ramona to Borrego to the Mexican Border to El Cajon).

CDF only has a handful of RCS channels, but they're used extensively by the local departments that CDF dispatches for and can pretty much be heard on any system in the county.

The rest of the local agencies pretty much fall in line with the RCS coverage maps (and are typically restricted to only be able to affiliate on their main channels with the zone their department is in)
