Color Code System To Simplify Fire Fighting Communications
The California Department of Forestry is using a process to assess the risk to
buildings and deploy resources accordingly when a wildfire hits. According to
CDF Division Chief Bill Clayton, color codes are being integrated into pre-fire
planning for high risk communities. Clayton says that will allow experienced
local officers to convey risk assessment and safety issues to strike team
leaders from other agencies in a matter of seconds. The colors
red,
yellow
and green
represent the different levels of risk. Red means high risk to homes that are
difficult to protect, with a risk of trapped firefighters. Yellow represents
moderate risk and green signifies a low fire risk.
